The Ikea Project (Mk I, II & III)

Just over 9 years ago when I was in a rental house with absolutely no furniture, I was given a set of Ikea bedside cabinets.

These were black with a cherry wood drawer front. The black  surround matched well with the 'white, black and grey' theme that I had in the bedroom, but the cherry wood was not really fitting in.

I was loath to paint the drawer fronts as I was unsure whether I might suddenly want to have the 'wood effect' at some point.

So after much heads scratching, I decided to 'wall paper' the fronts.

I headed off to the local DIY shack and found the perfect wallpaper and being able to get a sample meant that I was able to cover the drawers for free ( even better!).

Wall paper paste at the ready I set too and 20 minutes later ( and then a couple of hours drying time to add the handles) they were finished.

This however is not the end of the Ikea units, when  I moved into 'The Chateau' I decided to stay with the 'white, black and grey theme' and  keep the cabinets.

However after 5 years the wallpaper was staring to  look past its best.

This time I decided that painting was the option and meant that they would match the 2 chests of drawers that I had upcycled. ( photos will follow).

So with undercoat and white gloss at the ready I painted the drawer fronts white and changed the handles, adding a bit of 'frill '  to hid the original handles screw holes ( well you never know I may want to put them back on again !)

Well that was two years ago  and I am now considering changing them again, painting them grey and keeping the drawer fronts white.

However that will not be in the next few months so I have time to change my mind !.
